It's called BOOK for iPad, and it's made by a nice fellow named Scott Nedrelow. Before I talk about it at any length, let me share a video and a few photos of it:
(You knew I had to include Cosby somehow!)
So, yes, it's a case that looks like a book - but I love the visual irony and allegory in that. The iPad might represent some form of "reading in the future," so I like that BOOK both embraces that and mocks it - mine says plainly "This Is Not A Book" on the spine - but you can select several different spine labels and such. Beyond the visual symbolism (which is important for me as a librarian) the case is incredibly well-made. The outside is covered in a lovely cloth over (presumably) cardboard boards. The "pages" of the book are three pieces of well-painted and assembled wood. There is even a headband included to make it look like the "pages" are hand-sewn. Inside the case are several layers of very soft wool to pad, cradle, and protect the iPad in the case. The colors are all very complimentary, and the wool area provides a nice place to put the iPad on top of so you don't scratch it while using it. The case is closed with a discreet Velcro closure, ensuring that your case doesn't just come open. This case is clearly made by hand, and exudes quality everywhere - everything is precise and matches perfectly.
So the price? It's 99 dollars, and be prepared to wait up to 6 weeks for yours to be made (mine came a bit earlier). Every case is hand made (by Scott, I presume) and so there is of course a backlog of orders. I'll say this - the price is low for the quality of the case itself, and waiting is worth it. I would heartily recommend it to anyone looking for a great case for the iPad, even if you aren't a bibliophile or a book lover. Have questions about the case? Ask in the comments!!
Looks like a bookbinder found a new medium for their craft. Very nice!
ReplyDeleteHi Kristi! How are things over on the Emerald Isles? This case is great - glad you liked the post!
ReplyDeleteI don't have a case for mine and you are right about the protected sleeve, mine is already flimsy. I just use a cloth purse that fits it perfectly for now but i would like a bit more protection like this. Good to know!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review. I'm wondering if you think it'd still fit inside this sleeve case with a Speck CandyShell case on the back? Is there enough room for a slightly thicker iPad? Or is it really snug with just the plain iPad? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteKrissy,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment! Well, the case is pretty snug - if the case is pretty thin (and not too rubbery) I think it should fit - but it's designed to be pretty snug in there. You also have wool in there, and so if the case is rubbery or sticky, it will hang up on the wool - hope that helps!

great post! does it still close when you place it on the top portion with the little ledge? also, how does it work standing up in a triangle shape? for watching hands-free. thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi Katie, thanks for dropping by!
ReplyDeleteThe case will indeed still close with the iPad just sitting on the ledge. The triangle move works ok - but there is nothing preventing the cover from slipping and ending up flat on the surface it was sitting on - hope that helps!

I have read reviews claiming that a similar product; the dodo book has a major malfucntion. The bamboo which friction fits the ipad warms when transported to areas of different humidity than San Francisco, and loses its ability to fit the ipad.
ReplyDeleteAny ideas if the BOOK will experience the same problem, or is there no wood in the construction?
Thanks,
Ted
Ted,
ReplyDeleteWell, from what I hear the Dodo Case folks have improved their design and the iPad fits quite snugly and securely in the case now.
The BOOK (in my opinion) will not face the same problem as the iPad is held in the case not by friction, but by sitting in a felt pouch. The only wooden parts are the "pages" which form the outside of the actual space where the iPad is held.
Thanks for your questions!
Jason
The moleskin notebook lookalike ipad case is a lot better than nedrelow case because the curved bamboo tray gives you access to your ipad ports. You can find it at dodocase.com.
ReplyDeleteWell, I suppose it depends on what you want to use it for - thanks for your input, Francis!
ReplyDeleteAlso an excellent solution for a safely transport of the iPad, especially in dangerous areas of the city
ReplyDeleteI was wondering how much the case weighed. It you thought it adds anything dramatic to the weight of just the ipad.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
Well, it certainly doesn't add dramatically to the weight of the iPad, but it does add considerably to the bulk.
