Managing Reputations on Social Sites, by Teddy Wayne
I have many Facebook friends between the ages of 18 to 29 - as a matter of fact, I would say that that age group is the vast majority of my Facebook friends. Quite to the contrary of what Wayne says, I see people in this demographic sharing more on Facebook, not less. Of course, this is not true of all my Facebook friends, but there are some about which, frankly I know way too much.
I don't see people sharing less information, I see them sharing more, and across all demographics of my friends. Many people have their phone numbers and addresses, which might not be the best idea. Also, many of the people who are my Facebook friends who are younger than I have lots of pretty questionable photos and status updates. It might be a good idea to keep that type of thing off of your profile, or else you might not get a job - or worse yet, end up on Lamebook.
Still, I think social media is an essential and fun tool online. But it is the information and data shared with this tool that people need to be curating - selecting the items you would like to share with everyone, and things perhaps better kept to yourself - or offline between a small group of friends.
Do you have friends on Facebook sharing less? People with too much, or really inappropriate information? Have you seen trends that support Wayne's thesis? Let me hear from you in the comments!
Cute title. Old Fashioned, anyone?
