New Music Purchases

Last night, after having some delicious Mexican food at one of our favorite places here (Esperanza's), we headed over to Barnes and Noble on Hulen to browse through their music section and see if there was anything out that we wanted to purchase, or listen to.

Before I start talking about what we listened to and bought, allow me some digression first (as usual!) We know albums are somewhat a "thing of the past" with the advent of iTunes and MP3's, but I really prefer to have something physical to show for what I purchased. Of course, if there is only one song on the album that we like, we will buy the song off iTunes and be done with it. Amazon is indeed a cheaper choice for physical CD's, but we really like being able to preview the album in the store - thus, we go to Barnes and Noble.

Well, last night we listened to many different albums, and here is a list:

  • Edgar Meyer & Chris Thile - I really liked this, as I like both artists. The music is inventive, and very lovely. I think I would have bought it if it wasn't for the 19 dollar price tag!

  • Mendelssohn: Piano Trios Op 49 Op 66 with Emmanuel Ax, Yo-Yo Ma, and Itzakh Perlman. This was a classical record with some great artists on it, but like most classical music, I need a good long while to listen to the piece before I decide if I like it or not. Needless to say, we didn't buy it.

  • I Learned The Hard Way, by Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings. We have been waiting to buy this for several months, and so we did.

  • Treats, by Sleigh Bells. This was Jen's choice - not really my cup of tea, but right up her alley!

  • Something for Everybody, by Devo. Ok, this sounds awesome. I loved this from the first moment I heard it on KXT 91.7. It's like the best of the 80's, perfected.

We will be sure and tell you all more about these as we listen to them more. All this is in an effort to broaden the focus and writing (on my part) on the blog. Don't worry - we aren't going to review music and movies all the time, though!

  1. This isn't related to your music post, but I just thought of a feedback point for your new blog design (which I love, btw - yay white and minimal!!). I don't know if you know this, or even have any control over it, but only the first 2-3 sentences of your posts show up in my reader. Now, I obviously click out to them because I care about what you guys are talking about, because I personally know you, ya know? But for many other blogs, I simply skim past them because that kind of annoys me. For some reason, I just want to see the whole post in my rss feed reader. So I was just thinking, if you guys are trying to grow your readership, you might consider allowing the entire post to show up there? I think people are more apt to read it and get hooked on your writing if there are less steps involved for them. Just a thought, and you totally don't have to take or agree with my suggestion. :)

  2. This is a good thing for us to look at. We minimized what you see on the homepage for the blog because we felt as though it showed too much and did not give readers enough choices. However, I do like having the entire post up, mainly due to visual appeal. Thanks!

  3. Three cheers for Esperanza's! Also, I have a post coming up with my new gym playlist that contains several songs from our recent purchases. So far, very satisfied with all three.

  4. Wonderful suggestion, Erin - I just fixed it. I certainly prefer seeing the whole post in Reader, so thanks for letting us know it wasn't the full post in the feed. Let us know if it keeps doing summaries!

  6. [...] I like Sleigh Bells (the band). We bought the album a while back, and I really didn’t like it on the first or second listen. However, as all good albums [...]
