If you were to ask me, reader, "What is the best thing about the new iPhone?" I would reply "It's the screen!" The screen on this new phone is absolutely stunning. You've probably read this elsewhere, but it is difficult to know how great it is until you use one for a while. Text and graphics are just beautiful, and the pixels are imperceptible - it looks smooth, (almost) like a printed page. It makes the screen on our iPad look bad - and that is a great screen. The colors are vibrant, and the multi-touch sensors are far more accurate.
My second response to your imaginary question would be to point out the quality of the camera. Allow me to give you a couple of examples. The first image is from my 3G iPhone:
And this image is from my iPhone 4:
Even in Hipstamatic (highly recommended app, by the way) you can tell the difference. As a matter of fact, the first photo in this post was made with iPhone 4 in the Apple Store (I love that iPad display with the giant New York Times!) In addition, there is a digital zoom option (not a fan) as well as auto-focus (I am a fan!) and flash (also a fan!) Speaking of the flash, there is a free app that turns the flash into a flashlight, for those late-night glass of water runs to the kitchen - my oft-stubbed toes will thank me! And, how can I not mention the HD video camera? It's great, works well, and seamlessly works with iMovie on the phone, or on the Mac. Here's a video of Cosby I recorded last weekend:
Pretty cool, huh? We love using it for all those moments when you think "Man, I wish I had a video camera..." Well, now we do - and we use it frequently.
The speed of the phone itself is also excellent - things open quickly, and the keyboard works instantaneously. It's just something you have to use to realize how quick it really is.
Now, I am sure you have heard all about the reception and antenna issues with the iPhone, and I will say that we have had zero problems with ours - but we have had them in cases since day one (which, apparently, Apple is going to refund us for). Of course, they could have reacted more quickly to this problem, but at least they did the right thing in giving away the "fix" for free.
Overall, is it worth the price tag, and the tethering to AT&T for another two years? I think so, and I would recommend it to you, fair reader. Do you have one? Love it? Hate it? Let us know! If you have any other questions we can answer about the iPhone 4, let us know about that as well!
I, too, am smitten with the new iPhone 4. As an owner of a first generation iPhone, I noticed a marked difference in speed and efficiency by upgrading. I am astounded by the new screen as it is so crisp, clean, and makes everything look remarkably pristine. The camera is super speedy and the image quality is yards above the last. I love having the video option as well as a flash for dark settings. (Hello "demon" eyes!)
ReplyDeleteWith the bumper I have not experienced any issues with call quality or dropped calls. In fact, the new phone is an improvement over the last in this area as well. I am happy to see that Apple is taking the initiative to refund bumper costs or provide them to those who have not yet acquired one. Good business, folks.
