(Aside: Jen and I have a rule about new shows. We feel like if we don't like them after giving the show a fair shake after three episodes, then it's not worth watching. We ask people to do the same thing in watching one of our other favorite shows that we loan out quite a bit, Deadwood. Anyhow, on to Mad Men.)
I think for me last night, the real star of the show was the new Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce offices. Don't get me wrong, I loved the old offices, but the new ones are right in my design wheelhouse. It's almost as it Charles and Ray Eames hopped off their motorcycle and designed the new SCDP offices. Another highlight for me was that one of my two favorite characters, Cooper, seems a bit more active and involved - rather than the distant man on high he has been previously. I like Cooper because he seems to me the character with the least baggage (and thus the smallest storyline) and he wears bowties. I look forward to seeing more of him this season with his new underdog attitude. I do miss the Rothko, though.
On other fronts, my other favorite character, Roger Sterling, still makes me chuckle with his witticisms, and is still wearing three piece suits, cementing his place with my favorites once again. I love that here SCDP is in this modern office, projecting the very essence of cool to their clients, and Roger is still sporting the three-piece. Pretty cool.
Overall, without giving it away, the season premiere set up the themes for the show this season in an entertaining and enjoyable way. I look forward to the next episode and seeing what the heck Don is up to after that interview with the Wall Street Journal.
You really chose about the best photo possible for this post. Love it.
