I think it was the summer after my junior year at HSU that I took Modern British History. I wanted to take some courses in my major outside my emphasis area (US history), and one of my favorite professors, Dr. Donathan Taylor, was teaching the course. Dr. Taylor did a great job, but really I had little background (beyond my personal reading) in British history. I think if the course was in the usual semester (fall or spring) I would have not done as well - but because it was my only course, I could focus on the content, and I ended up getting an A. After that A (of which I was very proud), I really came to like summer school, and tried to schedule classes that I really didn't want to take during the summer.
Of course, the downside to summer courses is you really don't get a break from school work. This can be really challenging and has a tendency to lead to burn-out. Vacations (like the one Jen and I are taking next week) are key, as is just letting the schoolwork go on the weekends. It is your job, but you should treat it as such - leave it alone during the weekends and "after hours."
So, on Friday, my final summer course for my MSLIS wrapped up - management. I really didn't enjoy this course, but it is done. I also wrapped up my internship at the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame and Museum. During the course of my internship, I processed 3,077 images in their photography collection. I described which images were not digitized, corrected and improved metadata in the records for these images, and set up instructional and training materials for those that come after me. I can say that the collection is in much better shape than it was when I began. It was a great experience, and I am thankful that the Cowgirl allowed me to do my internship there, doing something which veery much benefits the museum. Now I have a couple of weeks to "catch my breath" before the final semester of my MSLIS begins.
What have you been doing this summer? Let me know!

Summer school is where it's at in my opinion. But I often enjoy a challenge and with the limited time to consume a copious amount of information I was able to fully immerse myself in the class. My last two years of college I took over 12 hours per summer session. It was hardcore but I enjoyed those semesters more than the long, tedious ones. Fast and furious with a bit of time to catch one's breath is usually right up my alley!
ReplyDeleteI am glad that you are done with this semester, especially since you did not quite enjoy this class. Aaaannnndddd, this means that you only have one semester left of your master's program! Yay you!
